Message	of the boundy layer of air around the ball which reduces wake turbulence (i.e. less drag) which allows the ball to fly farther. The lift on the ball is comes primarily from the backspin on the ball. I am not sure the dimples on a car would create lift but they would reduce drag but again who wants dimples all over their car.
